Fluffy pillows, soothing silky smooth warm sheets warped around your body as you sink into the soft yet cool gel memory foam mattress you just got on Christmas. Comfort and relaxation, could they be the culprit to burning your fat like a fire as you sleep at night?

You can burn more fat just by adjusting the thermostat! Sounds crazy right? I thought so too until I learned about the science behind it and I’m going to reveal all of that to you below because sharing is caring my brothers and sisters.

I know for me that I need at least 8 hours of sleep MINIMUM, or I will have zombie like side effects. Sleepy, dazed, unbalanced, anti-social, dazed, just an overall crappy feeling.

Nobody wants to feel this way, I know I don’t. The way we feel on the outside is almost equivalent to how our bodies are reacting on the inside as well. Just by not sleeping for a few days, things start to not function properly.

Your body will not produce insulin properly and insulin sensitivity is decreased by 25%.  Normally fatty acids and lipids are extracted from the bloodstream by the good old fat cells, thus preventing that nasty fat storage that we don’t want.

Not sleeping enough can eventually make your body produce more insulin, thus storing this unwanted fat, in dangerous places such as the liver, and this is the reason why so many people develop diseases, such as diabetes.

This is just from poor sleeping habits alone! This is a way people start to become obese. You can prevent all this just by getting good sleep! It is that easy.


Specific Foods That Help You Sleep At Night

If your having trouble sleeping at night, I have a solution that may increase your chances of getting a nice, restful, 8-hour REM sleep. Eating the right foods, not just before going to bed, but through-out the entire day. Whole grain complex carbohydrates play an important role in your sleep so I definitely recommend you eat some kind of carbs in the day. two-four slices of whole grain bread will due.

When your body has no carbs, no serotonin exists to convert to melatonin. the serotonin comes from the carbs and the melatonin helps you sleep deeper to get that nice REM sleep that is so important to have. Meats are also important because they have a special amino acid called tryptophan which makes you tired. Not all meats have it but some are:

  • Lamb
  • Chicken
  • Turkey

Not a good idea to be stuffed before going to bed. At the same time going to bed with your stomach yelling at you is not the smartest of ideas. Typically, give your stomach at least 2 hours before cuddling up with your partner and going to sleep. Plus, who wants to sleep next to someone who is constantly farting? Disgusting right?

Lower The Thermostat

Sleeping with the thermostat lowered and keeping the window open or the A.C on in the summer can help you burn fat. When your body is cold it burns fat to help keep you warm. Try sleeping in colder temperatures than you normally do. Doing this can activate brown fat which was designed in our bodies for survival.

A series of studies by the new England journal of medicine suggests that brown fat burns energy. It does this only if, the time spent in cold temperature, is in small intervals of time. (1) Saving some money in the winter time does not sound too bad, plus you get to burn more fat while doing so.

Many essential oils can help relax the body and mind. Lavender relieves anxiety and can put you into a nice deep sleep.  Everyone is different so what works for one may not work for another. Coffee, undoubtedly! Drinking this before bed would not be the smartest thing to do, considering the fact that it has caffeine in it. It’s safe to say that any beverage that contains this chemical is a big NO. So that would include:

  • Coke
  • Pepsi
  • Any soda really. (not only before bed time, I would never drink soda if I was trying to lose weight.)

Bringing It All Together

Bottom line is, if you don’t get the necessary sleep that your body requires, you will not be able to lose weight and in fact you could be putting on weight instead of taking it off. Even if you stick to your diet regimen, without sleep your body will store unwanted fat. You won’t have enough energy to take on normal daily tasks with efficiency, and you could hurt yourself. For example: falling asleep at the wheel would not be a good thing.

Make sure you follow my suggestions if you want to gain that perfect REM sleep we all know and love. Eat the right foods, drink the tea that helps you sleep, and use the essential oils i provided and I guarantee you will be able to fall asleep for at-least 8 hours straight.

    I agree sleep is super important for the body to recharge its batteries. I have heard that it helps in weight loss as well.

    When reading about what not to take before going to bed, it reminding me of my college years. I had been complaining to my roommate that I was having difficulty sleeping at night. He firmly asked the question, “it wouldn’t have anything to do with the Yodels and the liter of Coke you take every evening, would it?” Once I stopped, my sleeping habits improved. We both got a good laugh about it as well.

    I enjoyed the section on various teas that can be used to help people sleep (seems like a better alternative to Yodels and Coke, no?) I am a big tea fan, so that works for me.

    You are so right when you say that sleeping can make you gain. When I don’t sleep well, the day after, I am starving more than I usually do. I didn’t know about this, and I thank you for it! I have plenty of camomille in my garden, so I will definitely follow your suggestion. I do have a question, though. Is soda without sugar also fattening? I ask this because you don’t recommend drinking any soda.

      Actually, there was a study which found that diet soda is actually worse for your body then regular soda. I would recommend to just completely avoid soda all together. 

      It’s okay though, so many drinks out there that are delicious and healthy for you. 

      Yes it’s true when you don’t sleep your body is even more hungry that usual because your body is looking for energy because when you sleep you gain energy. The body is an amazing thing haha.

    I am having a lot of sleepless nights, i must admit i have put some weight on could this be something to do with it?.
    Oh how i long for a good nights sleep:( you are right about not wanting to wake up with that crappy feeling (thats me)
    I sleep with the window open, if i dont then i am more restless, its really great to know that the cold air helps you
    burn fat.
    wow lavender i have heard that can help you sleep , something i will deffo get, i didnt realise you could put the oil straight onto your pillow( i really have to try this).

      Yes, if you haven’t been getting a lot of sleep, this could definitely be the reason why you have been putting some weight on.  

      People don’t realize how Important getting a restful sleep is. And REM sleep is very important, I’m sure you know that is when you dream. If you are having dreams then you know you are getting a restful sleep.

  6. I can totally vouch for the usage of essential oil. Recently, I’ve been using Lavender prior to bed time and I am surprised that I slept through the night comfortably. I usually get up for the toilet or when it becomes too warm, but not these few days.

    The way I do it is just adding a couple drops of Lavender into a spray bottle containing witch hazel and apply some on my neck and on the pillow. I practically doze off within minutes.
